11 September 2025, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: - Key government agencies and partners gathered for the Final Internal Validation Meeting of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Blue Carbon Policy Roadmap on August 15, 2025 at the Climate Change Development Authority (CCDA) in Port Moresby. The roadmap reflects months of collaboration and a shared commitment to climate resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable coastal livelihoods.

Led by CCDA in collaboration with the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority and supported by the GIZ-implemented Management and Conservation of Blue Carbon (MACBLUE) Project and The Nature Conservancy, the meeting focused on finalizing inputs to protect PNGโ€™s mangroves, seagrasses, and coastal systems.

โ€œTogether, we have worked to create a practical framework to protect and restore our blue carbon ecosystems, critical to climate resilience, biodiversity, and coastal livelihoods,โ€ shared William Lakain, Acting Manager for the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification Unit at CCDA.

โ€œLetโ€™s work together to deliver a document we can all stand behind, one that is strong, actionable, and truly reflective of PNGโ€™s priorities.โ€

According to MACBLUE Project PNG Advisor, Phelameya Haiveta, local communities depend on seagrass and mangroves for the ecosystem services they provide, and therefore their protection and conservation should be strengthened. "Through GIZ support, the government has been able to hold stakeholder consultations and support โ€˜writeshopsโ€™,โ€ Haiveta added.

With external stakeholder validation set for late September, the meeting marks a key step forward in delivering an integrated and inclusive pathway for blue carbon protection in PNG.
