PNG Concludes Final National Consultation on Blue Carbon Policy Roadmap

More than 80 representatives joined the final consultation held at the Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby

30 May 2025, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - The Government of Papua New Guinea, through the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) and the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority, hosted the Final Consultation Workshop for the PNG Blue Carbon Policy Roadmap (2025–2028) at the Lamana Hotel.

The workshop, held in partnership with the GIZ Pacific Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and The Nature Conservancy, brought together over 80 representatives from government agencies, civil society organisations, community-based groups, development partners, and the private sector. This marked the final milestone in the development of PNG’s first national policy framework focused on the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of blue carbon ecosystems.

“This consultation marks a major step forward in shaping Papua New Guinea’s commitment to protecting our marine and coastal ecosystems. The workshop reinforced our shared responsibility in protecting our blue carbon ecosystems,” said Debra Sungi, Acting Managing Director of CCDA.

“With the support of all stakeholders, we now have a clearer path to finalise and implement a practical, inclusive Blue Carbon Policy Roadmap that aligns with our national climate goals and supports local communities.”

Blue carbon ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses are among the world’s most efficient natural carbon sinks and play a vital role in reducing the impacts of climate change. The consultation workshop follows a two-year series of engagements to design a policy roadmap that aligns with PNG’s climate goals, international commitments, and the needs of local communities.

The workshop provided a platform to present the final draft of the Blue Carbon Policy Roadmap (2025–2028), consolidate feedback from stakeholders, and prioritise key areas of action.

The finalised PNG Blue Carbon Policy Roadmap will now be refined with input from the workshop and submitted for formal cabinet endorsement. Once adopted, it will provide a guiding framework to support national blue carbon initiatives, strengthen climate resilience, and protect vital marine and coastal ecosystems.
